Anorthite - anorthite

Anorthite - anorthite

Anorthite is one of the six types of plagioclase, and is the most calcium-rich mineral. It often forms short columnar crystals with simple crystal faces. It does not usually coexist with quartz. There are cases where anorthite is found as a phenocryst of basalt or as a crystal formed in basaltic magma that is erupted by a volcanic eruption and deposited with volcanic ash and lapilli. The anorthite megacrysts found around Miyake Island in Tokyo and Lake Kuttara in Hokkaido, which belong to this type of occurrence, are world famous. It also occurs in orthopyroxene gabbro, and in limestone, dolomite, and rocks that are low in silica and rich in calcium and have been subjected to relatively high-temperature metamorphism. The name comes from the Greek word meaning that the mineral is triclinic and not straight, and the Japanese name comes from its chemical composition.
