Monomers with vinyl groups CH ₂ ＝CH-, such as propylene, are stereochemically divided into those in which the methyl groups in the side chains are regularly arranged along the molecular chain and those in which they are not. Conventional radical polymerization only produced randomly oriented amorphous atactic polypropylene, but the use of Ziegler-Natta catalysts produces crystalline isotactic polypropylene in which the methyl groups in the side chains are always arranged in one direction. It is also possible to synthesize crystalline syndiotactic polypropylene in which the side chains are regularly and alternately oriented, but this is not currently in practical use.

　プロピレンのようにビニル基CH₂＝CH－を有するモノマーは，重合すると，立体化学的に側鎖のメチル基が分子鎖に沿って規則正しく配列するものと，そうでないものに分かれる。従来のラジカル重合ではランダムに配向した非晶性のアタクチックポリプロピレンしか得られなかったのが，チーグラー=ナッタ触媒を用いると側鎖のメチル基がつねに一方向に配列した結晶性のアイソタクチックポリプロピレン(イソタクチックポリプロピレン)が得られるのである。なお側鎖が規則正しく交互に配向した結晶性のシンジオタクチックポリプロピレンも合成可能であるが，今日実用化されていない。…
