The four wars fought by ancient Sparta to conquer Messenia and put down major rebellions. The first war (c. 743-724 BC) was the Spartan invasion of Messenia, in which the Spartans occupied the fertile Sthenyclaros plain and forced the local Messenians into the ranks of helots. The second war began in the early 660s BC with a rebellion by the Messenian helots, and in the late 650s BC Sparta put down the rebellion and conquered the whole of Messenia, reducing most of the Messenians to the status of helots.
