A freshwater fish of the Salmonidae family. Biwa trout are lake-type, while amago are river-type. They are thought to be found only in Lake Biwa, but due to migration they can also be found in Lake Suwa and Lake Chuzenji. In the juvenile stage, they have oval markings and small bright red spots on their sides, and after descending into the lake, their body color becomes silvery-white. In the reproductive season, they have greenish nuptial colors with spots on their sides. In males, both the upper and lower jaws elongate. In Lake Biwa, after 3-4 years of age, they swim upstream in the rivers that flow into the lake from mid-October to late November and spawn in shallow areas of the gravel bottom.

サケ目サケ科の淡水魚。ビワマスは湖沼型で河川型としてアマゴがいる。天然のものは琵琶湖にだけ分布するとされているが，移殖により諏訪湖，中禅寺湖などにも見られる。稚魚期には体側に楕円状の斑紋と鮮やかな赤色の小斑点が見られ，湖に下ってからは体色は銀白色となる。生殖期には，緑色を帯び体側に斑状の婚姻色が現れる。雄は上下両あごが伸長する。琵琶湖では生後3～4年を経て，10月中旬～11月下旬にかけて湖に流入する河川に遡上（そじよう）して，れき底の浅所に産卵する。
