...This is the milk that is secreted between feedings and stored in the milk ducts. It is called foremilk and accounts for about one-third of the amount of milk that is fed at each feeding. As the milk is fed, milk with a high fat concentration and pH (called hindmilk in contrast to foremilk) is secreted from the mammary glands, which mixes with the foremilk and gradually changes its composition. There is a hypothesis that the baby senses this change in fat concentration and pH and naturally stops nursing, thus regulating the excessive drinking of milk in early infancy when the sense of fullness is not yet fully developed.
