Meishin Expressway - Meishin Expressway

An expressway connecting the Chukyo region and the Hanshin region. Legally, it is a section of the Chuo Expressway Nishinomiya Line. It starts in Komaki City, Aichi Prefecture, and connects to the Tokai-Hokuriku Expressway in Ichinomiya City, and the Hokuriku Expressway in Maibara City, Shiga Prefecture. It connects to the planned Kinki Expressway Nagoya-Kobe Line in Kusatsu City, Shiga Prefecture and Takatsuki City, Osaka Prefecture, and connects to the Chugoku Expressway and the Kinki Expressway Nagoya-Osaka Line in Suita City, Osaka Prefecture, before terminating in Nishinomiya City, Hyogo Prefecture. It is 195 kilometers long, with six lanes between Ritto City and Otsu City, Shiga Prefecture, and between Kyoto City and Suita City, and four lanes in other sections. The section between Komaki City (Komaki Interchange) and Higashiomi City, Shiga Prefecture (Yokkaichi Interchange) is managed by Central Nippon Expressway Co., Ltd., while the section between Higashiomi City and Nishinomiya City, Hyogo Prefecture (Nishinomiya Interchange) is managed by West Nippon Expressway Co., Ltd.

Construction began on Japan's first expressway in 1957, with the first 71-kilometer section opening in 1963 between Ritto Town (now Ritto City) and Amagasaki City in Hyogo Prefecture, and the entire section opening in July 1965. It connects directly to the Tomei Expressway, which opened in its entirety in 1969, at its starting point in Komaki City, and serves as a major transportation artery in the Tokaido Belt Zone. In fiscal 2010, the average number of vehicles using the expressway was approximately 250,000 per day.

中京圏と阪神圏を結ぶ高速道路。法律上は中央自動車道西宮(にしのみや)線の一部区間である。愛知県小牧(こまき)市を起点とし、一宮(いちのみや)市で東海北陸自動車道に、滋賀県米原(まいばら)市で北陸自動車道にそれぞれ接続する。滋賀県草津市および大阪府高槻(たかつき)市で計画路線の近畿自動車道名古屋神戸線に接続、大阪府吹田(すいた)市で中国縦貫自動車道および近畿自動車道名古屋大阪線に接続し、終点の兵庫県西宮市に至る。延長は195キロメートル、滋賀県栗東(りっとう)市―大津市間、京都市―吹田市間は6車線、その他の区間は4車線である。小牧市(小牧インターチェンジ)―滋賀県東近江市(八日市インターチェンジ)間は中日本高速道路が、東近江市―兵庫県西宮市(西宮インターチェンジ)間は西日本高速道路がそれぞれ管理する。

 日本最初の高速道路として、1957年(昭和32)着工、1963年に栗東町(現栗東市)―兵庫県尼崎(あまがさき)市間71キロメートルが最初に開通し、1965年7月に全通した。1969年に全線開通した東名高速道路と起点の小牧市で直結し、東海道ベルト地帯の輸送の大動脈となっている。2010年度(平成22)では、平均して1日約25万台の利用台数があった。
