A perennial grass of the grass family. It is found throughout Japan, China, the Korean peninsula, and Taiwan, growing wild on roadsides and in grasslands. It is 40-80 cm tall, with linear, relatively short leaves. The stem is erect, with alternate leaves with sheaths, and a flower spike at the top of the stem. It consists of numerous spikelets, each of which has several flowers gathered flat. It has long awns. The flowers are whitish-green, sometimes tinged with purple, but later turn yellowish-brown.
