Tokyo Tower

Japanese: 東京タワー - とうきょうたわー

This comprehensive radio tower is located in Shiba Park (formerly part of the grounds of Zojoji Temple) in the center of Minato Ward, Tokyo. Its official name is the Japan Radio Tower. It was designed by Naito Tachū (1886-1970) to prevent TV towers from growing too many in number, and was completed in December 1958 (Showa 33). It covers an area of 2,118 square meters and is 333 meters tall, 9 meters higher than the Eiffel Tower in Paris. There are two observation decks, 150 meters and 250 meters away, from which you can see a magnificent view, with the Kanto Plain and Mt. Fuji visible during the day, and the beautiful lights of Tokyo at night, making it one of Tokyo's famous sights. All of Tokyo's TV stations have used it, but with the opening of Tokyo Skytree in 2012, the transmitters of seven terrestrial digital TV broadcasting stations other than the Open University of Japan were relocated to the Skytree in May 2013 (Tokyo Tower became a backup radio tower). Tokyo Tower Foot Town, located at the base of the tower, has a shopping arcade on the second floor and an amusement park on the rooftop. To the left of the tower entrance is a statue of a group of Karafuto dogs that participated in the Antarctic wintering team, created by Takeshi Ando (1923-2019). It was registered as a tangible cultural property of the country in 2013.

In 1956, the first Antarctic research team brought 15 Sakhalin dogs as sled dogs. When the team withdrew in 1958, this statue was erected as a memorial to the dogs that were left behind. 東京都港区のほぼ中央、芝公園（旧、増上寺(ぞうじょうじ)境内の一部）内にある総合電波塔。正式名称は日本電波塔。テレビ塔が林立するのを防ぐため、内藤多仲(たちゅう)（1886―1970）の設計で1958年（昭和33）12月に完成した。敷地2118平方メートル、高さ333メートルで、パリのエッフェル塔より9メートル高い。150メートルと250メートルの2か所に展望台があり、そこからの眺望はすばらしく、昼は関東平野、富士山が眺められ、夜は東京のあかりが美しく、東京の名所の一つとなっている。東京の全テレビ局が使用してきたが、2012年の東京スカイツリー開業に伴い、2013年5月、放送大学以外の地上デジタルテレビ放送7局の送信所がスカイツリーに移転した（東京タワーは予備電波塔となる）。鉄塔の脚下にある東京タワーフットタウンには、2階名店街、屋上の遊園地などがある。なおタワー入口左手に安藤士(たけし)（1923―2019）制作の南極越冬隊に参加したカラフト犬の群像がある。2013年国の登録有形文化財となる。
