An insect of the Lepidoptera family, Pyralidae (illustration). This brown moth is often found inside houses, and varies in size from 1 to 2.5 cm with its wingspan. Males are generally small and have rather thin wings. The larvae are blackish caterpillars called rice worms that feed on stored grains and other dry foods. They make nests by binding grains and insect droppings together with silk, and live inside them to feed on food. When they become mature, they make rough cocoons similar to the larval nests and pupate. They emerge two to three times a year, and overwinter as larvae. The adults fly near places where grains and dry foods are stored, such as warehouses and kitchens, and will sneak into even the smallest gaps to lay eggs.
