The land of Iwashimizu Hachimangu Shrine was located on the west bank of the Kizu River in Tsuzuki County, Yamashiro Province, at the foot of Mt. Kannabi in what is now Kyotanabe City, Kyoto Prefecture. Also known as Shinen-en, it is said to have been donated to Iwashimizu Hachimangu Shrine in the 10th century (its first appearance in historical documents was in the mid-12th century), but its state during the Heian period is unknown. To the northwest of this manor was Osumi Manor, which was owned by Kofuku-ji Temple in Nara, and in 1235 a fierce conflict broke out between the two manors. What began as a dispute over water use developed into a feud between the two powerful families of Iwashimizu and Kofuku-ji, involving the Imperial Court and the Shogunate, and the fighting continued until near the end of the following year. The course of the conflict can be divided into three periods: May to October 1235, December to March 1236, and July to November 1236. In the first period, the monks of Kofuku-ji Temple burned down over 60 households in the firewood manor, and in the second period, the Hachiman messenger killed the Kasuga jinin of Oju-sho Manor. In December 1235, the monks of Kofuku-ji Temple, calling for the monks of the Seven Great Temples to join forces, headed north carrying the Kasuga sacred tree, and faced off across the Uji River against the Rokuhara samurai who were trying to stop them. In October 1236, the shogunate decided to take forceful measures, placing shugo in Yamato, where there had never been a shugo position before, confiscating the monks' chigyo manors, and replacing the jito, which finally calmed the situation. In response to this, the shogunate abolished the shugo and jito that had been established in November. However, disputes over the border between the two manors continued, and in 1281, by imperial decree, the two manors were designated as "the entire Kanto region" (during the Nanboku-cho period, the manor was returned to Iwashimizu Hachiman Shrine).
