A former town in Shimomashiki County, central Kumamoto Prefecture. It occupies the south bank of the Midorikawa River, and the plateau in the east is farmland, while the western part is the Kumamoto Plain, producing rice, wheat, melons, strawberries, and other crops. There is also a sake brewery. It is close to Kumamoto City, and has many commuters. In March 2010, it was incorporated into Kumamoto City along with Ueki Town in Kamoto County. 36.88 km2 .
