...This theory attributes the cause of delinquency to anomie situations, that is, situations in which the harmonious relationship between such cultural goals and the means to achieve them has been broken down. T. Sellin's "Cultural Conflict Theory," which holds that cultural conflict creates crime, can also be considered a social structural approach. A.K. Cohen's "Delinquent Subculture Theory" discusses the formation and transmission of subcultures specific to delinquent groups as a counterculture to the value system of the American middle class, and is related to anomie theory in that it supplements heterogeneous contact theory while also analyzing the relationship between culture and social structure.
