Aleksandr Petrovich Izvol'skiy

1856‐1919
A diplomat and politician in the final days of the Russian Empire. From 1894 to 1906, he served as envoy to the Vatican, Belgrade, Munich, Tokyo, and Copenhagen, and was appointed foreign minister in May 1906. He supported the Stolypin regime with pro-British and pro-German diplomacy. In 1907, he participated in the conclusion of the Anglo-Russian Entente. He also made an agreement with Austria over the Dardanelles (September 1908), but this resulted in Austria annexing Bosnia and Herzegovina, and he suffered a diplomatic defeat. He was unable to recover from the Russo-Italian Agreement of October 1909, and was dismissed as foreign minister in September 1910.

帝政ロシア末期の外交官，政治家。1894‐1906年に，バチカン，ベオグラード，ミュンヘン，東京，コペンハーゲンの各公使を歴任して，06年5月，外相に就任。親英親独外交でストルイピン体制を支えた。07年には英露協商締結に参加。さらにダーダネルス海峡をめぐり，オーストリアと協定した(1908年9月)が，この結果，オーストリアがボスニア，ヘルツェゴビナを併合するところとなり，彼は外交的敗北を喫した。09年10月の露伊協定でも挽回できず，10年9月外相解任。
