Novelist and critic. Born in Okayama Prefecture on June 26, 1903. Graduated from the Department of English Literature at Tokyo Imperial University. While at university, he participated in the literary society Shumon, and after graduation became a member of the literary city Literature. He made his debut on the literary scene in 1930 (Showa 5) with Nichi-Germany Competition, and published a collection of short stories Love and Africa and a collection of critical essays Intellectual Literature Theory in the same year, drawing attention as a leading member of the emerging artistic movement. Fuyu no Yado (Winter Inn), serialized in Bungakukai in 1936, highlighted the confusion among intellectuals after the decline of the left-wing movement. His long novel Wind and Snow (1938-1939), written during the war, is a work that shows resistance to fascism from a liberal standpoint. After the war, he depicted the anguish of an intellectual young man after the defeat in works such as "Kuroi Kage" and "Oboryo no Hanashi" (both 1949), but from around the time he served as special counsel for the May Day Incident in 1953 (Showa 28), he gradually became more interested in society and consistently maintained an attitude of resisting reactionary trends from the side of progress and innovation. Works from that period include the collection of critiques "Europe Kiko" (1951) and the full-length novel "Nichigetsu no Mado" (Window of the Sun and Moon) (1957-1958). He also translated many works of English literature. He passed away on April 23, 1973.
