1499‐1546 A 16th-century Indian female poet. Known as an ardent follower of Krishna, she is shrouded in numerous legends. Born as a princess in the kingdom of Mereta, she married Prince Bhojraj of Mewar in 1516, but lost her husband within a few years, and then her father, brother-in-law, and other close relatives to illness and war, and she left this world behind. At that time, she imagined Krishna, an incarnation of the god Vishnu, and clung to him. Mirabai's ardent faith in Krishna, who she saw as her husband, and her frequent association with ascetics and believers led to the displeasure of her in-laws and various forms of persecution.
