[1] (noun) ① (translation of vidyā-rāja) A Buddhist term. (i) The most excellent mantra. The king of mantras. (The One-character Chōrin-ō-gyō Sutra on the Place of Enlightenment, Vol. 5) (b) By extension, it refers to the deities who preach mantras. They are the deities who receive the Tathagata's teachings and subdue all living beings, and they have an angry appearance.
