[1] (noun) ① (translation of vidyā-rāja) A Buddhist term. (i) The most excellent mantra. The king of mantras. (The One-character Chōrin-ō-gyō Sutra on the Place of Enlightenment, Vol. 5) (b) By extension, it refers to the deities who preach mantras. They are the deities who receive the Tathagata's teachings and subdue all living beings, and they have an angry appearance. They are counted among the Five Great Wisdom Kings and the Eight Great Wisdom Kings. (Shogenjikō Setsuyōshū ( 1717 )) (Shinjizakkaki (Mixed Records), Vol. 13) ② A wise gentleman. A wise son of heaven, the emperor. Meiō. ※Taiheiki (late 14th century), Vol. 13 "This is solely due to the kindness and blessings of the Mighty King." [2] It refers to the Five Great Wisdom Kings, especially Acala. ※Konjaku (around 1120) vol. 13 "Indeed, the power of the Lotus Sutra is a new miracle of the Myo-o."

[1] 〘名〙① (vidyā-rāja の訳) 仏語。(イ) 真言のなかでもっともすぐれたもの。真言のなかの王。〔菩提場所説一字頂輪王経‐五〕(ロ) 転じて、真言を宣布する諸尊をいう。如来の教令(きょうりょう)をうけて衆生を調伏する諸尊で、怒りの相を表わす。五大明王・八大明王などを数える。〔書言字考節用集（1717）〕〔真偽雑記‐一三〕② 聰明な君子。賢い天子、天皇。めいおう。※太平記（１４Ｃ後）一三「是偏に明(ミャウ)王慈恵の恩幸なれば」[2] 五大明王、中でも特に不動明王をいう。※今昔（1120頃か）一三「実に、法花の力、明王の験新た也」
