1915‐90
German conductor. Known for conducting chamber ensembles, mainly Baroque music. He made his debut as a conductor in 1937. Conducted the Hannover Symphony Orchestra from 1941 to 1943. Founded the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra in 1945, and the Stuttgart Classical Philharmonic Orchestra in 1966. He was particularly skilled in performing JS Bach, and had a great influence on the reevaluation of Baroque music after the war. He also performed works by Britten and Hindemith. He first came to Japan in 1956 leading his orchestra.

ドイツの指揮者。バロック音楽を中心とした室内合奏の指揮で知られる。1937年指揮者としてデビュー。41‐43年ハノーファー交響楽団の指揮者。45年シュトゥットガルト室内合奏団を創設し，さらに66年，シュトゥットガルト古典フィルハーモニー管弦楽団を創設。とくにJ.S.バッハの演奏を得意とし，戦後のバロック音楽再評価において大きな影響力をもった。ブリテンやヒンデミットなどの作品も手がけている。1956年楽団を率いて初来日。
