1915‐90 German conductor. Known for conducting chamber ensembles, mainly Baroque music. He made his debut as a conductor in 1937. Conducted the Hannover Symphony Orchestra from 1941 to 1943. Founded the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra in 1945, and the Stuttgart Classical Philharmonic Orchestra in 1966. He was particularly skilled in performing JS Bach, and had a great influence on the reevaluation of Baroque music after the war. He also performed works by Britten and Hindemith.
