...It is sometimes paired with a drum called a baya, and the pair is called a tabla. In South India, there is a double-sided drum called a packhawāj, which has been passed down since ancient times. It is said that the court musician Amir Khusrow invented the tabla, or baya, by splitting it into two and striking it from above.
