835‐884 Founder of the Tulunid dynasty that ruled Egypt and Syria. Reigned 868-884. His father was a Turkish slave soldier, and he rose to prominence in the Abbasid army, and in 868 was sent to Egypt, where he gained real power. In his struggle against the Abbasid strongman Muwaffaq, he was saved by Muwaffaq's preoccupation with the Zanj Rebellion, and while he recognized the suzerainty of the Abbasids, he established virtually independent states in Syria and Egypt. His success was due in large part to a powerful slave army made up of Turks, Sudanese, and others, and the improvement of Egypt's economic power through skillful domestic politics.
