dhimotiki mousikiki (English spelling) dhimotikimousiki

...Today's traditional Greek music is characterized by the influence of the liturgical music of the Greek Orthodox Church since the Byzantine Empire and the music of the Ottoman Turks, who ruled the region for about 400 years from the mid-15th century. Greek traditional music is divided into two major categories: folk music (folk songs and folk dances) (dhimotikí mousikí) handed down in each region, and urban popular music (laïki mousikí). The folk music of each region can be divided into those of mainland Greece, those of the Ionian Sea, those of the Aegean islands, and those of Crete, which are clearly distinguishable in terms of style and the types of instruments used.
