1788‐1864 American inventor. He showed an early talent for mechanical things, and at the age of 18, he invented a machine that could make 500 rivets per minute. He later worked at the Springfield Arsenal in Massachusetts, where he made many inventions related to firearms manufacturing, such as a lathe that could cut the flat and oval parts of a gun breech and the barrel, paving the way for the interchangeable production method. One of his most important inventions was his gunstock-cutting machine of 1818, which became the prototype for the copying lathe. Although it was ugly in appearance, it used the principles of today's key duplication to efficiently make irregularly shaped objects, and was adopted by arsenals around the world.
