Tadamine Mibu

Japanese:
Tadamine Mibu

Dates of birth and death unknown. A poet of the early Heian period. Compiler of the Kokin Wakashu. One of the Thirty-six Immortal Poets. Father of Tadami. He served as an attendant to the Right General Fujiwara no Sadakuni, head of the Right Guard, head of the Uemon no Fuso, head of the Mizushidokoro Azukari, and the Provincial Daimoku of Settsu, and may have died after 930 (Encho 8). He left behind a number of poems in the Koresada no Miko no Ie no Utaawase (Poetry Contest of Prince Koresada's Household) and Kanpyo no Oton Toki Kisai no Miya no Utaawase (Poetry Contest of the Kanpyo no Oton Toki Kisai no Miya) as early as 892 (Kanpei 4), and was a prominent poet along with Kino Tomonori in the period immediately prior to the Kokinshu, through the Shinsen Manyoshu. The Kokinshu contains 36 of his poems, the fourth highest number in the collection. His poems are full of freshness and sharp wit, and he also has an experiential and subjective way of interpreting things, so in terms of elegance he falls slightly short of the other three editors of the Kokinshu. Also, perhaps because of his low status, there is nothing to record about his achievements after the Kokinshu. However, in later generations, when symbols came to be valued, he was reevaluated.

Nothing is more sad than the cold, seemingly cold separation at dawn. [Yasuhiko Kikuchi]
