He was the Byzantine Patriarch of Constantinople in 1043. As a young nobleman, he participated in revolutionary conspiracies against Michael IV (reigned 1034-41) and was exiled to a monastery. He was appointed Patriarch of Constantinople (1043) by his companion, the future emperor Constantine IX (reigned 1042-55). The emperor was then seeking an alliance with the Pope to oppose the Normans, who were gaining power in southern Italy. Michael feared that this would lead to the Pope's infringement of ecclesiastical jurisdiction over southern Italy, which belonged to the See of Constantinople.

ビザンティン時代のコンスタンティノープル総主教。若い貴族としてミハエル4世(在位1034‐41)に対する革命の陰謀に参加，修道院に追放されるが，その仲間で後に皇帝となったコンスタンティノス9世(在位1042‐55)によりコンスタンティノープル総主教に任ぜられる(1043)。当時皇帝は，南イタリアで勢力を伸ばすノルマン人に対抗するためローマ教皇との同盟を企てたが，ミハエルはそれが，コンスタンティノープル主教座に属する南イタリア地方の教会管轄権のローマ教皇による侵害に連なることを恐れた。
