1000-58 He was the Byzantine Patriarch of Constantinople in 1043. As a young nobleman, he participated in revolutionary conspiracies against Michael IV (reigned 1034-41) and was exiled to a monastery. He was appointed Patriarch of Constantinople (1043) by his companion, the future emperor Constantine IX (reigned 1042-55). Michael feared that this would lead to the Pope's infringement of ecclesiastical jurisdiction over southern Italy, which belonged to the See of Constantinople.
