Udine (English spelling)
The capital of the province of Udine in the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region in northeastern Italy. It is located about 100 km northeast of Venice. It is said that this town was the ancient Roman border city of Utina. It became part of Venice in 1420, Austria in 1797, and Italy in 1866. It was the headquarters of the Italian army in World War I, and the target of heavy bombing in World War II. It is an industrial and transportation center. Industries include automobiles, machinery, aluminum, cotton spinning, furniture, food processing (macaroni), and cement. There is a 14th century Gothic cathedral and a 16th century Renaissance clock tower. In 1976, the city was severely damaged by the earthquake that hit the Friuli region, but was rebuilt. Population: 99,157 (1991 estimate).
