1903‐62 Brazilian painter. He created murals for the Brazilian Pavilion at the New York World's Fair (1939), the Church of St. Francis in Belo Horizonte (1941), and the United Nations Headquarters in New York (mid-1950s), among others, and his success is said to be a modern myth, on par with that of soccer player Pele. Born in the state of São Paulo, the youngest of 13 children, he worked on coffee plantations from an early age. At the age of 15, he went to Rio de Janeiro to study at an art school. In 1928, he received a two-year scholarship to study in Paris. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
