...This paper rejected the conventional impressionistic criticism, emphasized the "characteristics of the mechanical medium" of photographic art, and explored the essence of photography, and is considered to be the paper that established modern photo criticism in Japan. He was the first to translate reportage photo as "journalism photography," and clarified the system of this field. After World War II, in addition to his work as a critic, he also served as a permanent director of the Photographic Society of Japan.

...photography that widely communicates events in society and the natural world. It is said that the word was first used in Japanese in the early Showa period by photography critic Ina Nobuo as a translation of "reportage photo." In that sense, the word "hoshosha" has a somewhat proper noun-like character, but in today's general consciousness, it is used in a broader sense in roughly the same sense as so-called "documentary photography," and also includes so-called "news photography," and it has become established as a word.
