…In the 9th century, Regensburg flourished as the capital of the East Frankish Kingdom and as a center of trade with the East. In the early 10th century, when the kingdom was weakened, the Bavarian nobles united to fight against the invasion of the Magyars, and in 907 elected Arnulf von Bayern (?-937), son of Margrave Luitpold of Carinthia, who led the resistance, as Archduke (the beginning of the new tribal Grand Duchy of Bavaria). Arnulf was defeated in the contest for the title of King of Germany against Archduke Henry of Saxony (I), but was allowed to retain the right to invest bishops in Bavaria. …
