During the Edo period, a market selling straw raincoats and hats was held in front of the Kaminarimon Gate of Sensoji Temple. It was held on March 19th, the day after the Sanja Festival (the 18th in years when there was no festival), and on December 19th, the day after the Tonen Market, and continued until the beginning of the Meiji era. Farmers from nearby areas came to the market to sell not only straw raincoats but also mortars. [Iijima Yoshiharu] Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
