In the Edo period, peasant uprisings occurred in the Nanzan Gotaku-iri domain (present Minamiaizu County, Fukushima Prefecture, etc.) of Aizu, Mutsu Province. During the Kyoho era (1716-1736), peasants in Shimogo, who were suffering from the harsh tax increase policy, appealed to the shogunate magistrate, and the uprisings spread throughout the Nanzan area, demanding a reduction in tax, a change in rice tax to kokudai-inou, and the abolition of the village head system. As a result of the shogunate's investigation, their demands were accepted, such as the suspension of rice transportation to Edo, and some village heads were recalled from their duties and fined, but the ringleader of the uprising and five others were condemned, and 377 people were punished with fines and the confiscation of their fields and household goods.
