Silver scriptures - Ginjikyo

...Its origins can probably be traced back to the decoration of Buddhist boxes, and the technique of decoration was established in China. Gold- and silver-lettered sutras appear in records from the Tang dynasty onwards, and the oldest surviving example is the Diamond Prajnaparamita Sutra, printed in the 9th century with inside-paper pictures, and prints with sutra pictures were widely produced after that. In Korea, the oldest example is the Avatamsaka Sutra, printed in the mid-8th century with purple paper and gold and silver paint inside-paper pictures, and in the following Goryeo period, gold- and silver-lettered sutras with elaborate covers and inside-paper pictures developed along with the national project of copying the Tripitaka, and the technique was exported back to China during the Yuan dynasty (the Goryeo Tripitaka). ...
