…The superfamily Phyllostomatoidea includes the two families of bats, the Spiropodidae, which have no tail or whose tail protrudes beyond the femoral membrane and has a nasal lobe, and the short-haired Long-lipped Bats (Pinnaeus peltata). The superfamily Vespertilionoidea includes the Long-tailed Bats, which have no nasal lobe and have a prominent tragus, the Lapwing Bats, which have a vestigial first digit, the Acanthoptera Bats, which have a claw and sucker on the first digit, the Salamander Bats, which have a fused tragus and pinna, the Vespertilionidae, which have a well-developed tragus, the Lesser Pterygota Bats, which have a short tail that protrudes upward from near the center of the upper surface of the femoral membrane, and the Free-tailed Bats, which have a short femoral membrane and a long tail that protrudes backward from its posterior edge. There are more species of chiroptera in Japan than there are rodents, with about 38 species in five families: Pteropodidae, Rhinolophidae, Pteropidae, Vespertilionidae, and Free-tailed Bats.
