Kanjoshin - Invitation deity

...Originally a Buddhist term, it was used to mean asking the Buddha to live a long time, turn the wheel of the law, and protect all living beings, but later it came to mean asking the Buddha and Bodhisattva to live a long time. In Japan, with the development of Shinto-Buddhist syncretism, the term kanjyo meant asking for the oracles of Suijakushin such as Hachiman Daibosatsu and Kumano Gongen, and further came to mean inviting and enshrining the spirits of gods and Buddhas, and the gods invited there came to be called kanjyoshin. Famous examples of kanjyo include Kasuga Taisha in Nara, which was invited from the Kashima, Katori, and Hiraoka shrines; Todaiji Hachiman (Tamukeyama Hachiman) and Iwashimizu Hachiman, which were invited from Usa Hachiman in Kyushu; and Tsurugaoka Hachiman in Kamakura, which was invited from Iwashimizu Hachiman.

…もともとは仏教より出た語で，仏に久住して法輪を転じ衆生を擁護することを請う，という意で用いられたが，のちに仏菩薩を他に請じて久住を願うことに転じて用いられるようになった。日本では神仏習合の発展によって，八幡大菩薩や熊野権現などの垂迹神の神託を請うことを勧請といい，さらに神仏の霊を招いて奉安することをいうようになり，そこに勧請された神を勧請神と呼ぶようになった。有名な勧請の例としては，鹿島･香取･枚岡（ひらおか）の各社から勧請した奈良の春日大社，九州の宇佐八幡から勧請した東大寺八幡(手向山（たむけやま）八幡)･石清水八幡，石清水八幡から勧請した鎌倉の鶴岡八幡があげられる。…
