An insect of the Hymenoptera family, Ichneumonidae. Body length 6-7 mm. It is black-brown in color, covered with thick short hairs all over its body, and has a spine that protrudes backwards from the center of the back of its thorax. It is known from Hokkaido and Honshu, and is often collected from the banks of lakes and streams. It parasitizes the larvae of aquatic caddisflies. Adult females fold their wings and enter the water, penetrating the nests of caddisfly larvae that are attached to stones on the bottom of the water, and lay eggs there. The hatched larvae feed on the caddisfly larvae and grow, spin cocoons in the nests, and pupate. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
