...Alberti applied a design of a combination of orders and arches derived from the Roman Colosseum to the front wall of the Palazzo Rucellai (1446-51) in Florence, paving the way for urban mansions with Renaissance designs. Robert Smythson (c. 1535-1614) of England attempted to give symmetrical wall composition to medieval mansions with a hall at the center through the design of country houses such as Longleat House (c. 1568-75). The Italian Serlio also went to France and designed urban mansions such as Grand Ferrard (1544-46) in Fontainebleau, creating the prototype of the French urban residence called an hôtel. ...
