...In addition, there were branches in Italy, Spain, Portugal, the Netherlands, Denmark, and the United States. Socialist parties were forming early in Austria-Hungary, especially in Germany, but because of the law on associations, they did not result in organizational membership. Instead, the "German branch" in Geneva, led by JP Becker (1809-86), was active. These branches had various characteristics depending on the traditions and circumstances of the movement in each region, and this was reflected in the discussions at the annual congresses held in Geneva, Lausanne, Brussels, and Basel from 1866 to 1869.
