A French island off the south coast of Newfoundland in North America. It is a relic of a vast French territory that was once in North America, and is a French regional public entity along with the nearby island of Saint-Pierre. It has an area of 115 km2 . It is connected to the neighboring island of Langlade (Little Miquelon, area 91 km2 ) to the south by a sandbar. The combined population of Langlade and Langlade was 709 (1990). It is close to the northwest Atlantic fishing grounds, and the fishing industry, including cod fishing, is thriving. Administratively, it forms the department of Saint-Pierre and Miquelon (overseas), and sends members to the French National Assembly. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
