Somapura

...The site of the largest Buddhist monastery in the Indian subcontinent. From the inscriptions on excavated clay tablets, it was revealed that the ancient name was Somapura, and that it was founded by Dharmapala, the second king of the Pala dynasty (reigned around 770-810). Inside the square enclosure wall, measuring approximately 300m on each side, were 177 monks' quarters, and in the center of the inner courtyard was a cross-shaped temple (base 109m x 96m) with stairs on all four sides.
