One of the "Apostolic Fathers" of Christianity. The original (Greek) title is simply "The Pastor". It is a type of apocalyptic literature, probably written in Rome in the middle of the 2nd century by a man named Hermas. The text consists of three parts: five "visions", 12 "commandments", and 10 "parables". It preaches the need for repentance, and the overall tone is practical and ascetic. At one time it was treated as the "Bible", but it reflects one aspect of the 2nd century church well.
