South Manchuria Railway Research Department

Japanese: 満鉄調査部 - まんてつちょうさぶ

A research institute for the South Manchuria Railway Company (Mantetsu). Founded in 1906 after the Russo-Japanese War, Goto Shinpei, the first president of Manchuria Railway, recognized the need for a comprehensive research institute to put colonial management on a rational basis, and in 1907 established the Research Department (renamed the Research Section the following year) at the headquarters, along with the East Asian Economic Research Bureau, the Geological Research Institute, and the Central Testing Institute. Initially, the Research Section mainly conducted basic research on the politics, economy, and traditional customs of Manchuria (now northeastern China) and Mongolia, but with the organizational reform of 1948, the scope of research was expanded, and research began on Soviet Russia and mainland China, including full-scale research on modern China that was not necessarily limited to the company's business.

南満州鉄道株式会社(満鉄)の調査研究機関。日露戦争後1906年に創設された満鉄の初代総裁後藤新平は植民地経営を合理的基礎のうえにおくための総合的調査研究機関の必要を認め，東亜経済調査局，地質研究所，中央試験所とともに07年本社に調査部(翌年調査課と改称)を設置した。調査課は当初主として満州(現，中国東北部)･モンゴル地方の政治，経済，旧慣などの基礎的調査を行ったが，23年の機構改革とともに調査事項が拡大され，ソビエト･ロシアや中国本土に関する研究が開始され，そのなかでかならずしも社業にとらわれない現代中国についての本格的研究も行われた。
