Battle of Sparta and Argos in 418 BC. Persuaded by Alcibiades, the Argive allies and Athenians captured Orchomenus. In response, Sparta marched to Mantineia with the Tegean army. The largest battle in Greek history took place near Mantineia, but Sparta won a crushing victory and restored its prestige. A battle of the same name was fought between Sparta and Thebes in 362 BC, with the latter side, led by Epameinondas, winning. [Masato Furuyama]

前418年のスパルタとアルゴスの戦い。アルキビアデスの説得で，アルゴス同盟諸国とアテナイ勢はオルコメノスを陥れた。これに対してスパルタはテゲア軍とともにマンティネイアMantineiaに向かった。マンティネイア近傍でギリシア史空前の規模の戦闘が行われたが，スパルタは圧勝して威信を回復した。なお，同名の戦いが前362年スパルタとテーバイの間で行われ，エパメイノンダスが率いる後者が勝利した。【古山正人】
