An echinoderm of the Asteroidea class, Asteroidea. Also known as sea urchin. It inhabits coral reefs south of Okinawa, in the Western Pacific, and in the Indian Ocean. Its shape is quite different from that of other starfish, and it is quite heavy. Its body is pentagonal, nearly circular, and about 20 cm in diameter. Its back is rounded and bulging, and is rough all over with coarse granules, with light and dark circular spots arranged in concentric circles on a blue, green, or yellow background. The ventral surface of the body is yellowish brown and flat, but is densely covered with rather large granules. There are five clear radial grooves centered on the mouth.
