Manjugani (bun crab) - Manjugani

Japanese: マンジュウガニ(饅頭蟹) - マンジュウガニ

A general term for crustaceans of the Atergatis genus in the family Xanthocerasidae in the order Decapoda. Crabs of the family Carappa were once also called Atergatis, but to distinguish between the two, the basic names Karappa and Atergatis were used, and adjectives were added to them to form the species names. Both species have slightly elongated, rounded, raised shells, so the Japanese name Atergatis fits well. The most common Atergatis species is the smooth Atergatis floridus (illustration), which is found on rocky reefs around the country.

十脚目オウギガニ科マンジュウガニ属Atergatisの甲殻類の総称。かつてはカラッパ科のカニ類もマンジュウガニと呼ばれていたが，両者を区別するためにそれぞれカラッパとマンジュウガニを基本名とし，それに形容詞をつけて種名とするようになった。両者ともやや横長の甲が丸く盛り上がっており，マンジュウガニの和名がよくあてはまる。　マンジュウガニ類のうちもっとも目にするのは各地の岩礁に多いスベスベマンジュウガニA.floridus（イラスト）である。
