Between 1894 and 1914, the 21-storey red-brick Mitsubishi Building was built, and the surrounding area was nicknamed "Icchō London." Tokyo Station was completed in 1914, and Maru Building in 1923, and Marunouchi rapidly developed into Japan's largest business district. ...

...The history of the business began in 1890, when Mitsubishi Corporation, as it was then called, purchased land in Marunouchi and Kanda-Misakicho totaling approximately 353,000 m2 from the government. Mitsubishi built a series of red brick buildings designed by British architect J. Conder on this land, creating a modern office district known as "Ichi-cho London." In 1923, the Marunouchi Building (commonly known as Maru Building) was completed. ...
