It can reach a height of 15m and a diameter of 60cm, with light brownish-gray bark on the trunk. The current-year branches are thick and have a square, angular cross-section. The leaves are odd-pinnate compound, opposite each other, with 5-9 leaflets, long ovate, and 5-15cm long. In April and May, panicles are produced at the ends of the current-year branches. It is dioecious, with no corolla, but female flowers have a pistil and sometimes two stamens, and male flowers have two stamens.
