This is a tea house in Kohoan, a sub-temple of Daitokuji Temple in Kyoto. The building of Kohoan was the work of Kobori Enshu in his final years, but it burned down in 1793 (Kansei 5). It was soon rebuilt with the assistance of the Konoe family and Matsudaira Harusato (Fumai), and has been faithfully restored to its original appearance. The new guest hall was moved from the sub-temple Unrin-in, and the roof was completed in 1897, with the Bokenseki tea house built to the northwest of the guest hall. The room is 12 tatami mats in size, with a one-mat daidoko and a one-mat daidokiri hearth. It is in the perfect Shoin style, with nageshi (railed beams) on the corner pillars and attached walls, and a line of nageshi around the floor, creating a sense of calm by harmonizing the heavy axis with the delicate sand-sliding ceiling.
