He resumed the campaign to conquer North Africa under the orders of Caliph Abd al-Malik, and defeated the stubborn resistance of the Berber prophetess Qahina (697-698), completing the conquest of North Africa. He established an arsenal in Tunis and worked to strengthen the Arab navy. After being dismissed from his post along with the governor of Egypt in 698, he participated in a battle with the Byzantine Empire and was killed in battle.
