Shojo Bakama - Shojo Bakama

Japanese: ショウジョウバカマ - しょうじょうばかま
Shojo Bakama - Shojo Bakama

An evergreen perennial plant of the lily family (APG classification: Myrmecaceae). The underground stem is thick and short. The leaves are oblanceolate with sharp tips, hairless on both sides and slightly glossy, and many open in winter. From March to July, 3 to 5 crimson-purple flowers bloom in a cluster at the top of a 10 to 30 cm flower stalk. During the fruiting season, the flower stalk can grow to 60 cm. It grows on the forest floor of lowlands and low mountain forests from Hokkaido to Kyushu, as well as in moist flower fields and high moors in the lower alpine zone. The name is said to have come from the fact that the red flowers resemble the face of a shojo (an imaginary animal believed to be a type of monkey) and the leaves that spread out below resemble hakama (Japanese trousers).
