Orchid Island

An island in southeastern Taiwan. It is located 65 km east of Eluanbi, the southern tip of Taiwan Island. It has an area of ​​46 square kilometers. It is also known as Hongtou Island. It is home to the Malay Yami people and has a population of about 2,000. The island is made of andesite and tuff and is surrounded by coral reefs. The highest peak, Mount Hongto (also known as Mount Fanglan, 548 meters), rises in the north, and there are many mountains and hills with little flat land. The Yami people maintain a primitive lifestyle, mainly engaged in fishing and sailing in pointed-boat boats. External traffic connects to Taitung by sea and air.

台湾南東部の島。台湾島南端鵞鑾鼻(がらんび)の東65キロメートルに位置する。面積46平方キロメートル。別称紅頭嶼(こうとうしょ)。マレー系ヤミ族の居住地で人口約2000。島は安山岩、凝灰岩よりなり、サンゴ礁に囲まれている。北部に最高峰紅頭山（別称芳蘭(ほうらん)山、548メートル）がそびえ、山と丘陵が多く平地は少ない。ヤミ族は原始的生活を保ち、漁業を主とし、舳先(へさき)のとがった寄木(よせぎ)舟を操る。対外交通は海路と空路で台東に通じる。
