Wan'enji Temple

Japanese: 鰐淵寺 - がくえんじ

A Tendai sect temple in Bessho-cho, Hirata City, Shimane Prefecture (now Izumo City). The principal image is the Thousand-Armed Kannon and Yakushi Nyorai. It is said to have been founded by Chiharu. Located deep in a secluded mountain valley, it was known as the Hieizan of Izumo. It was a base for Shugendo, Zao faith, and Nyohokyo faith. There are many important cultural properties, including a standing statue of Kannon Bodhisattva with an inscription from the year Jinjin (692), a Sanno Honji Buddha statue, a one-character golden wheel mandala, and a prayer by Emperor Go-Daigo. It also has a large collection of documents from the Middle Ages.

島根県平田市（現・出雲市）別所町にある天台宗の寺。本尊は千手観音・薬師如来。智春の開基と伝える。深山幽谷の中にあり，出雲の叡山と呼ばれた。修験道，蔵王信仰，如法経信仰の拠点であった。壬辰（692年）年銘の観音菩薩立像，山王本地仏像，一字金輪曼荼羅図，後醍醐天皇の願文など重要文化財が多数ある。また中世文書を多数所蔵する。
