Pierre Carlet de Chamblain de Marivaux

Pierre Carlet de Chamblain de Marivaux

French playwright and novelist. Born in Paris. Spent his childhood in the Auvergne region, and returned to Paris in 1712. He frequented salons and wrote plays and novels, but did not achieve any success. In 1720, he achieved success with his comedy "Harlequin, the Loved One." In the same year, he was caught up in the economic policies of the Financial Superintendent Law and went bankrupt. After that, he tried to make a living solely by writing. He tried to publish a newspaper on his own many times, but it did not last long. With the exception of two unfinished novels, "The Life of Marianne" (1731-41) and "The Upstart Peasant" (1734-35), known for their realistic depictions and sharp psychological analysis, most of his works were plays, totaling 40. His works include "Love's Surprise" (1722), "A Play with Love and Chance" (1730), "False Confession" (1737), and "The Trial" (1749), which are famous as romantic psychological dramas. The emergence of love and the protagonist's psychology surrounding it are characterized by lines that are light-hearted but skillfully express the nuances of the heart, and these lines are called marivaudage. Not all of his works are romantic psychological dramas, and some, such as "The Island of Slaves" (1725) and "The Island of Reason" (1727), allegorically assert human equality.
